February seems shorter than ever this year. This is due, in part, I believe to PES management and our committees working extraordinarily hard to ensure that our VIRTUAL 50th Anniversary Meeting will surpass all expectations. I personally thank all who have reached out to share their support of our decision. We are actually in the process of reviewing abstract submissions and finalizing reports for presentation as I prepare this newsletter. I am pleased to announce registration is now open! See below for link to our Annual Meeting page for more information.
Although the groundhog predicted 6 more weeks of winter, spring is definitely “in the air” with a 68°F record high reported on February 17th in Central Park, NYC. We have noticed confused trees shooting out buds, the sun setting a little later and most importantly folks getting over the winter doldrums.
In February we celebrated Black History and International Women. We at PES recognize Robert Penny, MD and Jocelyn Elders MD as pioneer Black members of PES; and multiple women at PES were in the past and are currently in leadership positions.
In February we had an incredible number of webinars and presentations with more to come – see below.
I remind you of the upcoming PES/NIH Liaison session in a few weeks:
Session 2: March 22nd, 2022- 7PM-8PM, Barbara Linder, MD, PhD: “The role of the Program Director” and John Connaughton, PhD: “The NIH and Peer Review of Grant Applications”
I am happy to again announce that our 50 for 50 celebratory campaign and donation site is open. The full board membership is contributing, and all contributions will be held in a unique anniversary discretionary fund to be used for non-funded projects, EDI activities and general unmet needs of our educational efforts. These monies will certainly help us grow!
As promised we will shortly be posting a number of options offered by our Mission Alliance Partners for our patients to utilize as resources to help cover uninsured medication and laboratory evaluations. We are working on an expanded resource link on our website which will continually be updated.
In closing I am truly looking forward for March activities and I quote from sayings from the Ethics of our Fathers: Chapter 4
Who is wise? One who learns from every man
Who is strong. One who overpowers his inclinations
Who is rich? One who is happy with his lot and
Who is honorable? One who honors his fellow mankind.
In that vein I am saddened to learn of the events in Ukraine. My husband’s paternal grandparents actually emigrated in 1910 to the USA from Skvira near Kyiv then called the Belarus. Hopefully we will see an end to this invasion shortly with minimal casualties.
Indeed, sentiments of respect for life and one another are also relevant on a national front as many of you may have already heard about the Texas Governor’s directive regarding the medical care of transgender youth. Please refer to our response to the directive below.
Finally let me share my hope that in the near future your President can resume seeing patients without her Covid-19 protective garb.
With regards to all,
Sharon Oberfield, MD

Pediatric Endocrinology Flipped Classroom “EndoFlip”
The PES Fellows’ Education Sub-committee has been working to develop a Pediatric Endocrinology Flipped Classroom “EndoFlip” consisting of asynchronous audio-visual learning materials that are accessible to learners “on-demand” to support knowledge acquisition as well as case guides to support an interactive classroom experience focused on knowledge application. This curriculum reflects an effort to provide standardized, quality education materials following the American Board of Pediatric Content Specifications for Pediatric Endocrinology using a model that reflects the needs and desires of the adult learner. The first Program – Lipid Metabolism – is now available on MedEd On The Go and will be linked via PES website! This will also serve as a session of the PedsENDO365 program on March 11th, 3-5pm EST – Interested Fellows can register here:

Inequalities in the Distribution of National Institutes of Health Research Project Grant Funding
By Mike Lauer
This past September, my colleague and I published a paper in the journal eLife on inequalities in the support of scientists designated as Principal Investigators (PIs) of NIH Research Project Grant (RPG) awards. We found that funding inequality among PIs has increased over the past 25 years, but may have decreased modestly in more recent years. We also found greater levels of inequality across organizations.
March is National Women’s History Month

Surveys…We need your input!
diabetes providers’ perspectives about supporting type 1 diabetes management for children in the school setting Survey
Please help us with our research survey at the University of Pittsburgh! This survey asks about diabetes providers’ perspectives about supporting type 1 diabetes management for children in the school setting.
Who can take this survey?
- Physicians (including fellow trainees), nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and diabetes care and education specialists who participate in the care of children with type 1 diabetes.
A few things to know:
- This survey will take about 15 minutes to complete.
- Participation is completely voluntary
- Upon completion of the survey, each participant will have a random chance to receive one of fifteen $200 gift cards as a token of appreciation. (more information in consent)
- All responses are anonymous and confidential. Data may be shared with other sites but will be completely anonymous.
- You can withdraw at any time; however, as responses are anonymous and cannot be linked back to you, any data collected will still be used.
Are there any risks?
The only possible risk is breach of confidentiality. We plan to store your responses in a separate file from your contact information to minimize this risk.
You can access the online consent form and survey with this link: https://pitt.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6s7HSiBavUZypdc
We appreciate the opportunity to learn from you. Findings from this study will help us learn how to better support diabetes providers in counseling patients and collaborating with schools.
Please direct any questions to Dr. Christine March at christine.eklund@chp.edu.
PES ACTH Stimulation Survey
We would like to invite you to participate in this short survey regarding the diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency in the pediatric population.
Our goal is to collect information about the ACTH stimulation test protocols in different centers, and gain a deeper understanding on how different providers diagnose adrenal insufficiency in children. We hope that the results of this survey will help identify common practices and areas for further study and discussion.
If you are a pediatric endocrinologist, fellow or nurse clinician who orders and interprets ACTH stimulation tests, please consider taking 10 minutes of your time to participate. You can access the survey in the link below: A survey about ACTH stimulation tests in children (bcchr.ca)
Thank you in advance for your consideration and contribution to this work. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Trisha Patel, MD, FRCPC, trisha.patel@cw.bc.ca
Carolina Silva, MD
Carol Lam, MD, FRCPC
