Dear PES members and friends,
I am still relishing the very successful, first fully independent in-person meeting of the society in San Diego. The great success of this initial meeting emphasizes the vibrancy of our field, and our highly committed membership. I particularly wish to congratulate our outgoing president, Craig Alter. His dedication, vision and natural management style was critical for managing multiple challenges the society faced last year. As he mentioned at the meeting, the heavy lifting by the Program Committee and our management team at Degnon were essential in the execution of this landmark event. It is a grand legacy! Indeed, I am honored and privileged to now be serving as your President, and particularly grateful that Craig will be providing advice in the role of Immediate Past President. We also welcome the insights and wise perspectives of Mark Palmert, our new President-Elect.
As I reflect upon where much of the groundwork of the Society is based, I find our committee structure the foundation of so much of what we do. I plan to, over the year, highlight our various committees and their leadership. Enhanced awareness of these inner workings will help to foster our continued success. Mindful of the importance of the Program Committee, I wish to dedicate this space in today’s newsletter to their current chairs and highlight their goals and activities. Other committee chairs and activities will be highlighted in future newsletters.
PROGRAM COMMITTEE:
- 2022-3 Chairs: Leena Nahata (Children’s Hospital Columbus OH), Takara Stanley (Mass General)
- 2023-4 Chairs: Andrew Dauber (Children’s National Med. Center) and Jenise Wong (UCSF), BOD Liaison: Takara Stanley
- 2024-5 Chairs: Molly Regelman (Montefiore) and Roopa Kanakati Shankar (Children’s National Med. Center)
Virtually every aspect of the scientific program is managed by the Program Committee. Selection of the nature of the topics, the symposia sessions, “Meet the Professor” sessions, and invited speakers are vetted by this group. The challenge to provide balance of topics, expertise, and thematic elements to the program rest in their hands. Particularly challenging are constraints of time, even in a dedicated 3-day meeting. Don’t overlook the abstract submission and review process, which is of major importance to junior faculty for exposure of their preliminary work and basis for productive discussion regarding their work. All of this is quite a task, and the coordinated effort of this group is critical for success. Moreover, the planning requires (and successfully accomplished last year) a strategy for personal interactions, networking, and social functions. Planning is already at full speed for next year’s meeting in Chicago. Looking beyond next year, the committee is generating specific approaches for our Strategic Plan goal titled To Optimize member value through education, programs and services, which will formulate further long-term plans for the annual meeting. Hats off to this group and their leadership for their amazing work!
Please see below how you can submit your ideas for possible annual meeting session content by responding to the Call for Proposals below!
In the meanwhile, we hope they, and all of you as well, can take some time to enjoy the coming summer months.
Sincerely,
Tom Carpenter, MD

EDI Spotlight: Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
On July 26, 1990, Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA. This Act attempted to extend the types of rights provided under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to individuals with disabilities. In brief, the ADA made it illegal to discriminate against individuals with disabilities in areas such as public accommodation, employment, transportation, and access to local government programs and services.
