In Memoriam – Ian Meadows Burr, MD, PhD (1936-2026)

Obituary – Ian Burr, MD, PhD passed away in Nashville, on October 5, 2026, at the age of 90. He was a distinguished physician-scientist, visionary leader, and former chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt.

Ian graduated from the University of Melbourne Medical School in 1959 and earned a Ph.D. in physiology from Monash University in 1969. Following clinical training and research appointments in Australia, he came to UCSF in 1966 for pediatric endocrinology training with Melvin Grumbach. He later served as Chargé de Recherche at the University of Geneva’s Institute of Clinical Biochemistry, launching a period of exceptional academic productivity. He joined Vanderbilt University in 1971 as Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Investigator in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Director of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology. He led the division for 15 years before serving as Chair of Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine. In 1988, he returned to Vanderbilt as the James C. Overall Professor and the fifth Chair of the Department of Pediatrics.

His leadership and advocacy were instrumental in creating the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Dr. Burr made fundamental contributions to the understanding of insulin secretion, glycogen storage disease type I, and hormone measurement through radioimmunoassay techniques. His scientific achievements were reflected in more than 130 publications; He held leadership roles at LWPES and at advisory boards supporting diabetes research and care. In 2006, he retired, and his original academic Vanderbilt home was renamed the Ian M. Burr Division of Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes.
