Dear Colleagues,
The PES elections are now over. Congratulations to Craig Alter and Tandy Aye for being elected to the positions of President Elect and Director of the PES. The election slate included stellar candidates, and any of the candidates would have been terrific in these roles. You can rest assured that the transition of leadership roles within the PES will always be completely seamless, unlike other ongoing leadership transitions. In the meantime, the country is reeling under the onslaught of the current surge of COVID-19, and we continue to hold the dubious distinction of having the highest number of cases in the world. However, the good news about the vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna and Astra Zeneca is heartening, and there does appear to be light at the end of this very long tunnel. We will eventually prevail.
We just celebrated Thanksgiving, and this was a good time to reflect on everything we need to be thankful for in the midst of this pandemic. It was a time to take stock of family and friendships, workplace associations, and the patients and families that are a part of our bigger family. A sincere ‘thank you’ to all my colleagues for all you do for this Society in your roles on the Board of Directors, the Committees, the Special Interest Groups, the management, and the membership at large. This is a vibrant Society that has surged ahead this year with new initiatives and Special Interest Groups, with new ideas for the annual program, new ways to provide educational opportunities for our membership and engage medical students and residents in pediatric endocrinology early in their careers, has kept our membership abreast of new drug developments and COVID-19 related issues central to our subspecialty, and continues to come up with new ideas as the months roll by. You make the PES what it is today and thank you for all you do.
We continue to move ahead with planning for the 2021 and also the 2022 (50th Anniversary) meetings. The Call for Abstracts for the 2021 meeting is now OPEN (please see below). While there will be a registration fee for the 2021 meeting, this will be a reduced fee. Most offerings will be recorded and available to registrants for viewing during and after the meeting. The program is terrific, and a great start to our standalone meetings. A new feature of the annual meeting is ‘Doc in the Box’ sessions, when experts in a content area will be available to discuss challenging clinical cases submitted by our members. A call for cases to be discussed at these sessions will be sent to our membership soon. If you have an interesting/challenging case that merits discussion, do consider submitting this for a Doc in the Box session.
Dr. Alan Rogol has taken the lead on the History timeline for the PES for the 2022 meeting, and a 2022 meeting taskforce is working on operationalizing a series of interviews of senior members and past presidents that will be streamed between sessions and in the Exhibit Hall at the 2022 meeting. We continue to look for volunteers to help with the interviews. This will be the 50th Anniversary of the PES, and together, we should be able to make this a spectacular meeting.
A quick reminder of the upcoming SIG webinar in December hosted by the Diabetes SIG, the MAP virtual Spotlight (with a raffle for PES bucks to use towards membership dues, meeting registration and PES activities), and the call for applications for the Fellow Spring Retreat (details below). We have our first winner of the raffle from attending the MAP spotlight (included below), and the next winner will be announced in early December 2020.
Until next month,
Madhu Misra

This anonymous electronic survey is brief and should take no more than 5-10 minutes. We plan to distribute our findings to the Pediatric Endocrine Society membership as well as submit our findings for publication, which may improve the understanding of tobacco and e-cigarette screening in pediatric patients with diabetes mellitus. Your participation in this survey is voluntary and responses will be anonymous.
