Dear PES Members,
July starts with national celebrations. As a dual US and Canadian citizen, I get to celebrate both July 1st (Canada Day) and July 4th (Independence Day). Lots of fireworks! This summer those celebrations are happening alongside highly consequential national elections around the world, including in the UK, France, and, of course, the selection processes and nominating conventions in the US that will identify our Presidential candidates. Regardless of one’s political views, I am sure we all hope for no more violence as the US election proceeds through November and into the January Inauguration.
As you know, PES is getting ready for an election too! Nominations are now open for President-Elect and for a Director position on the Board of Directors. As mentioned last month, it is part of our Strategic Plan to try to have Society leadership reflect the membership of the society as much as possible—please consider nominating a colleague or yourself to run for one of these two positions. Nominations should be emailed to Dr. Kanthi B Krishna, MD, Chair of the Nominations Committee at bangalorekrishnak2@upmc.edu. In your nomination, please include a brief note (no more than one page) explaining why you think the nominee would be an ideal candidate for the position.
This month, I wanted to thank two of our members for long-standing and critical service to PES. Both Morey Haymond and Walter Miller are winners of the Society’s most prestigious award, the Judson J. Van Wyk Prize, and both have served PES in many ways over many years. Most recently, Morey Haymond has been one of the Associate Editors of the Society’s official journal, Hormone Research in Paediatrics, while Walter Miller has been serving as Chair of the Honors and Lectures Subcommittee overseeing the adjudication of our various Lectureships and Laureate Awards. Both will be stepping down this year, and I am pleased to announce that two highly accomplished and highly capable individuals have agreed to take over these roles. Alicia Diaz-Thomas, who is Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, will be a new Associate Editor at Hormone Research in Paediatrics, and Madhusmita Misra, who is one of our Past Presidents and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, will assume the role as Chair of Honors and Lecture Subcommittee. Thanks to all four of you!
These transitions provide an opportunity to highlight one of our member benefits—access to and publishing your work in Hormone Research in Paediatrics. As a PES member, you receive free access to the journal’s content through our website. Please see below for other information about HRP.
Please also see below for news and many PES-related activities/opportunities. As always, please read all the way to the end; there are many things happening!
Kind Regards,
Mark Palmert, MD

But, did you know that the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) has announced that they too will join this affiliation and declare Hormone Research in Paediatrics their official Journal? The addition of ISPAD should further increase the profile and visibility of the journal.

EDI Spotlight: Women’s Equality Day, August 26
Submitted by Ambika Ashraf and Ilene Fennoy
Women’s Equality Day, observed annually on August 26, commemorates the certification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which granted women the right to vote in the United States. It also should serve as a reminder that the certification of the 19th Amendment in 1920 was still insufficient to expand voting rights to all women as states based the right to register to vote on the payment of poll taxes until the passage of the 24th Amendment in 1962.
