Holiday greetings to all PES Members and Friends!
As we close out another calendar year, one naturally considers 2023’s issues and events. The year will be most remembered for our first and highly successful independent in-person meeting, mixed with those beautiful views of San Diego’s harbor. Personally, I reflect on my deep dive into society leadership and the satisfaction of working hard with a dedicated, talented, and supremely collegial Board of Directors. With many new initiatives behind us, we will continue our efforts to advocate for our mission(s) and to build successful programs in the coming year. At the top of the list is to bring our members a friendly, fresh, and intellectually stimulating 2024 annual meeting.
With the heart of these efforts in mind, I wish to highlight the Education Committee, chaired by Todd Nebesio. The committee is the largest of our standing committees and centrally engaged in many important Society activities.
Perhaps the most celebrated program the committee managed this year was the highly successful Discovery Program where students and first year residents received support for attending the Annual meeting. This created a great deal of enthusiasm about endocrinology at an early stage, and the program is to be expanded next year. The committee also arranges a quarterly webinar series, most recently related to an outstanding review of congenital hyperinsulinism, and has speakers engaged throughout 2024. The group is responsible for a host of educational materials, including the recent production of diabetes videos for newly diagnosed patients. Numerous educational materials, including both patient- and provider-directed handouts for endocrine diagnoses are available (and in several languages), thanks to them. Currently the work of planning the Spring Fellows’ Retreat is underway. I applaud Todd for mastering the organization of such a busy committee, as well as the various subcommittee chairs he coordinates within the larger group. Much of our mission is in their hands.
Wishing all of you the best of holidays and looking forward to a productive New Year.
Best,
Tom Carpenter, MD
