April 2024 President’s Letter

Dear PES membership,

In my final month as your president, I wish to relate to you my sincere gratitude to all of you for allowing me to serve in this capacity over the past year. It has been a true privilege to represent PES in a leadership role, and to offer support and direction to this incredibly vibrant community. One learns a great deal during the course of such a year, and when you think you finally learn how to be effective, the year is gone!  I will look forward to providing any further assistance next year as Mark Palmert takes the reins, but I can assure he is well-seasoned and has been an invaluable co-pilot over this past year: we are in the best of hands for the coming year. Currently our PES activities are focused on ensuring an informative and collegial annual meeting as we share our science and clinical experiences. The program committee’s work has been quite amazing in assembling a host of talented speakers.  Abstract submissions have outpaced last year’s enthusiastic response. We are a bit ahead of last year’s pace in terms of number of registrants. There is much to learn and much to discuss — everyone’s participation is extremely valuable. We’re counting on a productive time!

  • We are very fortunate to have representatives from NIH present at this year’s meeting. Dr Ellen Leschek will be available to meet regarding guidance on navigating the NIH grant process. You can also prime yourself on the implementation of the NIH’s updated and simplified Review Process at: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-24-085.html
  • The expanded DISCOVERY program is at high capacity! We welcome the enthusiasm of students and residents. It will be an important and exciting opportunity to engage with those considering a career in our specialty. If you are at the meeting and see an attendee with this program ribbon…please welcome them!

Our Committee highlight this month recognizes the all-important Membership Committee, under the stewardship of Lindsey Waldman, who has kept our numbers strong.

The society has held its steady membership count of between 1500-1600 members through the pandemic.   Please encourage your colleagues to join and participate in our Pediatric Endocrine community. If you are interested in serving as a member of the membership committee and wish to be a part of the team that welcomes new members please let us know Join a Committee – Pediatric Endocrine Society (pedsendo.org).
