I’m currently a second year pediatric endocrinology fellow at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. As a second year fellow, I’m pursuing the research track as a T32 trainee and I spend approximately 80% of my time doing research and 20% of my time doing clinical work. I love working with patients with Diabetes and hypoglycemia disorders. I’m currently doing my research on patients with insulinomas.
I’m Cuban American and originally from Miami, FL. I completed undergrad and medical school at Brown University in the wonderful state of Rhode Island. I moved to Philadelphia for residency and fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
From an early age, I experienced my grandmother’s struggles with diabetes, and I knew that I needed to help! In medical school, my endocrinology block was one of my favorites and made perfect sense to me. During my fourth year of medical school, I was lucky enough to rotate with Dr. Lisa Topor and her team in the pediatric endocrinology office at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and the field quickly became of top interest to me. Once I started residency, I found my endocrine rotation to be the most fascinating. I specifically enjoyed the management of patients with DKA and helping to diagnose and manage/cure patients that would come to CHOP’s Hyperinsulinism Center. My most memorable experience in residency that truly confirmed my love for endocrinology was participating as a physician at diabetes summer camp. Being able to make this experience a reality for kids and learning so much from them was life changing in so many ways. These are just some of the reasons why I chose the field of pediatric endocrinology. As a fellow, I continue to learn so much every day and I hope to contribute to the advancement of our field.
Dr. Ip never stopped believing in me and was always one of my biggest supporters in college and medical school. In medical school, Dr. Alverson helped build my confidence as a medical student and was always so encouraging. I knew I wanted to be a pediatrician like him. Dr. Topor sparked my interest in pediatric endocrinology and always gave great advice. In fellowship, my mentor Dr. De Leon, has been truly inspiring to work with and learning from her has been a privilege.
