Adriana Rodríguez González, MD
I am currently a 3rd year Pediatric Endocrinology Fellow at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. I received my undergraduate degree at the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras Campus in Puerto Rico and completed my MD at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Science Campus. I relocated to Miami, FL where I completed my pediatric residency at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, previously known as Miami Children’s.
My interest in endocrinology stemmed in my early pre-teens years when I got diagnosed with prediabetes. During my childhood I also encountered friends that had type 1 diabetes, and this changed the perspective I had on how a diagnosis can shape a person in their early years. My interest was not strengthened until I took an Endocrine course in my undergrad that made it clear I wanted to become a Pediatric Endocrinologist. During my residency Dr Diaz and Dr Pagan solidified my interest by the attentive care they had with their patients and their passion in their profession.
As a fellow I like all realms of endocrinology but am particularly interested in obesity, type 2 diabetes and thyroid disease. My fellowship research encompasses the use of continuous glucose monitors in youth at risk of type 2 diabetes as a way of risk stratification while assessing if this is feasible and acceptable in this population. I was able to receive the Endocrine Fellows Foundation Grant for this project in the fall of 2022. I am also involved in the implementation of a new protocol to monitor inpatient hypocalcemia post-thyroidectomy. One of my professional goals is to decrease the gap between health inequities for minority populations in the healthcare system, especially for my Latin community.
I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by incredible doctors and mentors during my fellowship years that have helped me shape my career path. I am immensely thankful to Dr Vajravelu that has guided me through the research world and has been an involved and attentive mentor. I also want to share my gratitude to my program director Dr Bangalore that has made the fellowship program feel as a second home. Every day I continue to learn because I am surrounded by an incredible interdisciplinary team of medical professionals that make it their goal the health of their patients.
