Edward Reiter Obituary (1943 – 2024) – Longmeadow, MA – The Republican
A note from some of his fellows:
Dr. Reiter’s influence on the collective fellowship program cannot be overstated. His educating style, guidance, and leadership were mixed with a softness and kindness that cannot be re-created. He was genuinely concerned about our overall well-being, from both an academic and intellectual perspective to a very personal one. He genuinely cared about the progression of our education by instilling in us the fire to keep researching and learning and gently reminding us how to remain humble and empathetic when communicating with our young patients.
Even though Dr. Reiter was known for being a quiet and strong leader, those who knew him best remember him for his fantastic sense of humor and wonderment. It was always with a sense of awe when this brilliant and accomplished individual, who has written the texts that we still read, would lead the discussion about how parts of growth and puberty continue to be a mystery. His lifelong positivity radiated through as he gave us his unwavering support, cultivating our minds and building our self-confidence. His lifelong quest for knowledge reminded us that there is no age or level of academia that should limit our ability to investigate and explore.
Each one of us has a personal and shared memory of him. With persistent encouragement offered on the pediatric floor, during morning meetings, and at fellows’ presentations to the lively discussions during his educational sessions, which continued even after his retirement, we remember how he was able to effortlessly break down intricate endocrine concepts into accessible topics. We remember how he radiated dedication and compassion when speaking to his young patients and their families. And finally, we remember his generosity of spirit when reading his inscribed Williams Endocrinology textbook and generosity of time when responding to our urgent calls about complex clinical situations. Even after fellowship, his presence gave us a profound feeling of safety, knowing that Dr. Reiter was there, like our own personal guardian angel and mentor who never stopped supporting us.
These are the mementos that we will carry forever. Dr. Reiter’s legacy continues through us as we try to emulate his greatness in our lives and our careers.”
