“Bob” was the consummate pediatric endocrinologist, melding the talents of a superb clinician with a deep understanding of the integrative aspects of physiology and imparting that wisdom to generations of pediatricians. He served as a medic in WWII and attended medical school at Northwestern, his house staff training in Des Moines, IA and fellowship at Hopkins with Lawson Wilkins. Following decades at Hopkins, he became chief of pediatrics at the University of Virginia. He studied many aspects of growth in children, especially as they relate to growth hormone and was the founding director of the National Pituitary Agency. His legacy includes more than 60 full professors around the world. I was privileged to have a close, four-decade relationship with him.
