Dr New was a pioneering pediatric endocrinologist and Pediatrics Chair at Cornell when few women attained those positions. She completed undergraduate work in chemistry at Cornell, medical school at Penn and trained in pediatrics and endocrinology at Cornell. With Ralph Peterson she studied apparent mineralocorticoid excess defining a mutation in the 11β-hydoxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 enzyme (Clin Exp Hypertens A 1986; 8:751). She and colleagues described the clinical and hormonal phenotypes of disorders of adrenal steroidogenesis and later the genotype/phenotype relationships of 21-hydroxylase deficiency (J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1992; 74:6). Dr. New served as president of both PES and the Endocrine Society and received the highest awards from both, the Fred Conrad Koch and JJ Van Wyk awards.
