July Fellow Spotlight – Gregory Power, MD

Gregory Power, MD

I am currently a third-year Pediatric Endocrinology fellow at the University of Iowa. I spend about 2/3 of my time working on research, including preparing presentations for the upcoming PES and ADA meetings, and spend the other 1/3 of my time completing clinical-oriented activities.

I am from Iowa, and went to college at Iowa State University, before coming over to the University of Iowa for medical school. After medical school, I took a 3-year vacation from Iowa to complete my residency at Indiana University at Riley Children’s Hospital and am excited to have been able to return to my home state for completion of my fellowship. I have a wonderfully supportive wife, a 2-and-a-half-year-old daughter, and 2 dogs to keep me busy when I am not at work.

I have a wide array of interests. Seeing patients and providing clinical care continues to be a top priority for me, and I see this as a major part of my career following residency. I am completing my fellowship research project related to Type 1 Diabetes, but I think on a broader scale, analysis of large datasets is something that appeals to my sense of curiosity, and I think will only become more important as we continue to have more electronic data available.

The two biggest things that drew me to Pediatric Endocrinology are the patients and the pathophysiology. I love that for so many of the conditions we see, we can provide treatment that allows our patients to live a fully, healthy, “normal” life. I also love that our treatments our rooted in physiology and pathways and how I can say “that makes sense” when I learn about how new treatments work.

I would like to give specific thanks to my mentors from Indiana University – including Dr. Nebesio, Dr. Eugster, Dr. Nabhan and Dr. Sanchez – as well as my mentors here at the University of Iowa – including Dr. Pinnaro, Dr. Norris, Dr. Tansey, and Dr. Curtis. I have learned so much from all of you!
