Dear Colleagues, 

Two big events marked July 2026 for me, and both, it turns out, taught me something about connection. First and foremost, North America hosted the World Cup. Even for someone who knows very little about soccer, I found myself eagerly anticipating the next game. Our division even had a World Cup pool to win bragging rights for predicting the overall winning team, and I learned that it is possible to score no points on sports brackets. The excitement was captured in people gathering to cheer for a duck wearing a team jersey, or in an entire fan base rowing their way up an escalator. We joined together as fans, celebrating and learning about cultural practices with total strangers next to us at a watch party. 

Let's not limit this excitement to only the World Cup. Let's bring it into the exam room, too. Let's remember the various cuisines and mealtime traditions when we teach patients and their families about new-onset type 1 diabetes. What types of carbs are important in their diet? When medical decisions need to be made, how do the elders in the community or cultural practices influence these decisions? What are the beliefs about Western medicine and its alternatives? These conversations help build the trust, rapport, and understanding needed to provide the best care possible for our patients. 

Finally, the 48 team flags of the World Cup became a checklist for me. Can I find these countries on a map, and have I met a patient, trainee, colleague, neighbor, or friend from each of these countries? It made me wonder how well our PES community reflects the diversity of the patients and communities we serve. Do we represent all 48 countries, and beyond that, all the backgrounds our patients bring into the exam room? How wonderful, though, to know that person and to have met them here in the U.S., which brings me to the second event of July 2026: the Semiquincentennial of the U.S. 

This country is 250 years old, and compared to many other countries, maybe we are just entering Tanner stage 2. We've got a lot of physical, emotional, and psychosocial development ahead of us. As pubertal development experts, we'll need to keep an eye on that growth trajectory.  

Until next month, here's to staying curious about the world our patients come from, one growth curve and one flag at a time.

Symposium in Pediatric Endocrinology: Hormones, Metabolism and Evidence (as part of the XIII Congress on Endocrinology by ASCEND)

Industry Sponsored Symposium: Assessing New Therapies and Lifelong Management Strategies for Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia 

This CME symposium equips clinicians to deliver lifelong, patient-centered care for individuals with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). Faculty will review the mechanisms, efficacy, safety, and tolerability of current and emerging therapeutic options, highlighting advances that may reshape glucocorticoid management. The session will emphasize shared decision-making strategies tailored to developmental stages, including best practices for transitioning pediatric patients to adult care. Participants will also learn to design comprehensive, evidence-based care plans that address the long‑term metabolic, cardiovascular, reproductive, and psychosocial sequelae of chronic glucocorticoid exposure—even after dose normalization—to optimize outcomes across the lifespan. 

 Learning Objectives: 

  • Evaluate the mechanisms, efficacy, safety, and tolerability profiles of current and emerging agents for CAH 
  • Integrate SDM approaches for patient management across the lifespan, including the transition of pediatric patients to adult care 
  • Develop comprehensive, evidence-based care plans to address the long-term sequalae arising from chronic glucocorticoid exposure in CAH, even after dose normalization

Rising Star Grant Applications Open

Funding Start Date:  November 1

The purpose of these small grants is to support and encourage research efforts of pediatric endocrinology fellows.

PES funds 5 Rising Star Grants (RSGs) per year. One of these awards is a named RSG (The Raphael David, MD Rising Star Grant) that will be given preferentially to an application related to the developmental biology of the testes or adrenal gland. The RSG program is in addition to the already established and larger Research Fellowship Grant (RFG) program.
