Mission: The PES Type 2 Diabetes SIG aims to improve the treatment of clinical care of those with youth-onset diabetes by addressing the unique features of this disease, which differs both from youth-onset type 1 diabetes and adult-onset type 2 diabetes, through education, clinical care standardization, research and advocacy.
Goals:
1. To develop and maintain patient educational tools that are specific to type 2 diabetes in youth. This includes keeping patients informed on the current evidence, in a meaningful and digestible way.
2. To develop and maintain clinical tools that assimilate the current clinical practice guidelines for treatment of youth-onset type 2 diabetes and related comorbidities in a practical way. This includes maintaining an updated resource to disseminate the evidence that is likely to change clinical practice.
3. To advocate for the patient population of youth with type 2 diabetes, who are under-represented in the field of diabetes, but have more rapidly-progressive disease and inequitable access to healthcare, which together can lead to significant health disparities.
4. To promote the need for research specific to youth-onset type 2 diabetes and, as experts in the field, to participate in the design and implementation of this research.
5. To create a cohesive community of professionals who are passionate about improving the treatment of youth-onset type 2 diabetes so that we have a forum to discuss our experience and generate the research questions that can advance the field.
