Mission Statement
Pediatric diabetes is the preeminent and ever growing challenge to the field of Pediatric Endocrinology. The Diabetes Special Interest Group aims to bring pediatric diabetes to the forefront of the PES in order to enhance care, improve outcomes and train the future generations of pediatric endocrinologists.
We intend to provide support and guidance for the pediatric endocrinology community in order to improve overall care of patients with diabetes, by addressing 4 main aims:
- Standardized medical treatment based on models of state-of-the art care.
- Supporting research initiatives focused on diabetes care delivery either from inside PES or through collaborations in sister organizations.
- Provide educational resources for training patients, physicians and fellows.
- Advocacy for models of care delivery and appropriate reimbursement.
Goals and Objectives
- Standardize medical treatment
- Identify best practices in treatment of T1D and T2D
- Develop standard-of-care guidelines for each
- Collaborate with international organizations devoted to care of children with diabetes in developing international guidelines and standards for T1D and T2D
- Research
- Promote collaboration of PES members with existing clinical research and QI projects (i.e. T1D exchange, Helmsley foundation projects) by Increasing visibility of diabetes research information on the PES site
- Develop curriculum for diabetes research for fellows and junior faculty and facilitate obtaining the funding for diabetes related projects
- Education
- Standardize diabetes education materials and offer links to those materials on the PES website
- Work on identifying the existing and developing new web and app based education materials for patients and education teams – collaborate with other PES committees (i.e. Education Committee)
- Educate primary care physicians on medical needs of patients with T1D and their role in multidisciplinary team
- Educate primary care physicians on their role in prevention and management of T2D
- Advocacy
- Advocate for multidisciplinary model of care delivery and alternative methods of reimbursement (global payments, bundled payments), that would help sustain it
