Dear PES Members,
The month of July brought continued concerns regarding the practice of medicine and the conduct of scientific research. As I flew into the San Francisco airport a few weeks ago, I exited the plane into the Harvey Milk terminal, named after the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He was assassinated on November 27, 1978, along with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone (after whom the San Francisco convention center is named). As I read more about him, two of his quotes resonated with me: “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness,” and “Rights are won only by those who make their voices heard.” We need to continue to advocate for our patients and our work to make our voices heard. To that end, PES will continue to partner with our sister societies in lobbying efforts. Please stand up for science in letter writing campaigns and ask your patients and their families to share their experiences with government officials, as personal stories often carry more weight.
Sincerely,

Laurie Cohen, MD
