Peggy Wu, MD
Hello! I’m Peggy and I am a third year fellow at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. I am originally from Michigan and completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan where I majored in Biochemistry and first became interested in medicine. I shadowed at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and fell in love with pediatrics, so when I started at Yale School of Medicine, I already knew I wanted to seek out more experiences in pediatrics. After graduation, I pursued further training at Lurie’s for pediatric residency and was fortunate enough to continue learning from an amazing community of pediatric endocrinologists by staying on for fellowship.
I have always had a particular interest in endocrinology after getting first-hand experience seeing family members deal with the daily struggles, constant decisions, and nagging worries of diabetes. Over the years, I was amazed to see the multitude of advancements in diabetes care and technology culminating in ongoing improvements in patient outcomes, and I was inspired to pursue my interest in endocrinology to make a positive difference in others’ lives. I also loved learning about the logical ways in which hormone pathways operate and interact, and greatly enjoyed the opportunities to develop longitudinal relationships with patients and their families and to collaborate with like-minded colleagues in caring for patients.
My clinical interests are broad and encompass both diabetes and general endocrinology, including type 1 diabetes and adrenal disorders. My research during fellowship has focused on improving our ability to diagnose and intervene early in PCOS. I also have an interest in quality improvement and enjoy the challenge of designing strategies to improve patient outcomes. In addition, I have loved staying involved in medical education and strive to become a strong educator who inspires a new generation of pediatric endocrinologists.
I have been very blessed to have had the opportunity to learn from and work with so many amazing mentors throughout my journey so far. From the very beginning of medical school through residency, a strong foundation in the art of medicine was instilled in me by Dr. Angoff, Dr. Lee, Dr. Hsieh, and Dr. Unti who were integral in teaching me to cultivate true passion for our everyday work. I am incredibly grateful to my clinical and research mentor, Dr. Torchen, whose endless support and guidance over the years as well as exemplary and compassionate bedside manner have shaped the kind of physician I strive to be. Dr. Habiby, my division head, has also been a remarkable driving force throughout training – prioritizing education and unparalleled patient care, lifting me up and challenging me to grow, and leading by example with care and respect for all. In addition, my wonderful community of co-fellows, nurses, diabetes educators, dietitians, social workers, support staff, and many more dedicated colleagues have all been the most amazing team to learn from which I will always be grateful for as well.
