SUMMARY:SEED Webinar\, Pediatric Obesity: Current Management
DESCRIPTION:Title Pediatric Obesity: Current Management \nBrief Description \nObesity is a serious health issue affecting the pediatric population. It is a complex chronic disease that carries a significant risk of comorbidities. The prevalence of pediatric obesity has increased exponentially in recent years with prevalence increasing with age\, particularly in children from lower socioeconomic status. Lifestyle and behavioral changes lead to only modest improvement due to challenges and limitations in access. Lifestyle therapy outcomes are disappointing as a majority of adolescents with severe obesity\, despite repeated efforts\, are non-responders or achieve only a modest effect on weight. There is a need for intensive and non-stigmatizing treatment strategies including intensive health behavior and lifestyle treatment and pharmacotherapy for children and adolescents who require additional treatment options to address this public health issue. This talk will aim to address the effective treatment strategies to manage pediatric obesity. \n  \nLearning Objectives \n\nReview AAP clinical practice guidelines on obesity\nDiscuss the shift in treatment approach to obesity\nDiscuss treatment options including medication and bariatric surgery\n\n  \nSpeaker \nShruthi Arora MBBS Assistant Professor\, Division of Pediatric Endocrinology \nEmory University School of Medicine \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Industry Sponsored Symposia - Achondroplasia a Multidisciplinary Conversation on Comprehensive Care
DESCRIPTION:Title: Achondroplasia a Multidisciplinary Conversation on Comprehensive Care \nDate: Thursday\, September 14 from 6:00 – 7:00pm EST \nSummary of Session:\nAchondroplasia (Ach)\, the most common skeletal dysplasia with disproportionate short stature\, is characterized by a number of medical\, functional\, and psychosocial challenges across the lifespan of an individual. Up until recently\, the treatment of the developmental complications of Ach involved only symptomatic management\, surgical intervention\, and lifelong follow-up care. An improved understanding of the molecular pathways involved in Ach has resulted in the development of new and emerging targeted therapies for this condition. These novel agents aim to restore bone growth and prevent many of the medical conditions associated with Ach. In this virtual live symposium\, an expert panel will address the complications associated with Ach\, current care recommendations\, strategies for coordination of care with specialists\, and new and emerging therapies for Ach.\n \nSpeakers: \n\nAndrew Dauber\, MD\, MMSc\, Chief of Endocrinology\, Children’s National Hospital\, Washington\, DC\nNadia Merchant\, MD\, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics\, Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes\, Children’s National Hospital\, Washington\, DC\nWilliam G. Mackenzie\, MD\, FRCS(c)\, FAAOS\, Chairman\, Department of Orthopedic Surgery\, Nemours Children’s Health\, Wilmington\, DE\n\n\n\nSponsored by BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc.

SUMMARY:Lipid SIG: State of the Art Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nWithin the past several years\, there have been major therapeutic advances and new clinical trial data on the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia and its relationship to cardiovascular disease (CVD). New medications that either function within the liver to prevent protein production using anti-sense technologies and monoclonal antibodies that target proteins that block triglyceride clearance are in late stage clinical development. These drugs promise a treatment for triglyceride-induced pancreatitis. But will these triglyceride reductions affect development of CVD? Genetics implicates genes associated with defective plasma triglyceride catabolism with CVD. Thus far\, clinical triglyceride reduction trials using omega 3 fatty acids or fibrates have not provided clear answers. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nTo determine the genetic basis of familiar hyperchylomicronemia\nTo define the lifestyle\, dietary\, and pharmacologic factors and associated diseases that cause hypertriglyceridemia\nTo recognize the currently available medications for reduction of circulating triglyceride levels.\n\nSpeaker: \nIra J Goldberg\, MD\nClarissa and Edgar Bronfman\, Jr. Professor\nDirector\, Division of Endocrinology\, Diabetes and Metabolism
