DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 17\, 2025 \nSession Type SIG: State of the Art: Bone & Mineral SIG \nSession Title Current and emerging treatments for hypoparathyroidism \nBrief Description \nHypoparathyroidism remains a challenging condition to manage in children. Unlike many endocrine hormone deficiencies\, hormone replacement has never been approved for use in children with parathyroid hormone deficiency. The current standard of care of multiple daily doses of calcium and calcitriol is burdensome\, provides inadequate control of hypocalcemic symptoms\, and is associated with high risk of side effects including nephrocalcinosis. Recent years have seen exciting advancements with a number of new PTH replacement and PTH receptor analog therapies gaining approval in adults and entering into clinical trials for children. This state of the art session will be delivered by Dr Peter Tebben\, a combined pediatric and adult endocrinologist with specific expertise in the management of hypoparathyroidism across the lifespan. For many years\, she has served as the program director for the Pediatric Scientist Development Program and the Child Health Research Career Development Award Program\, which are national physician-scientist K12 mentoring programs. Dr. Winer completed subspecialty training in pediatric endocrinology at the NIH.\nCatherine Gordon\, MD\, MS\, is clinical director and a senior investigator at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)\, part of the National Institutes of Health. In her new role\, she leads NICHD’s intramural clinical research program to improve understanding of the biological\, medical\, reproductive\, and behavioral aspects of typical and atypical human development. She is also the secretary/treasurer at the APS. She is subspecialized in both adolescent medicine and pediatric endocrinology with research experience in adolescent bone health.\nErica K. Rosemond is the acting deputy director of NCATS’ Division of Clinical Innovation (DCI) and chief of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program Branch directing the CTSA Program institutions. She holds a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences\, with specialization in neurosciences. Prior to joining NCATS\, Rosemond managed grant portfolios at the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Mental Health\, supporting research education\, career development and training.\nVivian Ota Wang\, PhD\, FACMG\, CGC currently serves as the deputy director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH). As a genetic counselor\, genomicist\, and psychologist\, she has experiences in research\, education\, science policy\, and ethics.
