Mission Statement
Approximately one in 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer before age 20 years old in the United States. Endocrine complications are among the most common late effects observed in childhood cancer and brain tumor survivors with approximately one-half to two-thirds of them affected.
Endocrine issues include:
- Growth hormone deficiency and other anterior pituitary hormone deficiencies
- Precocious puberty
- Primary hypothyroidism
- Thyroid nodules and cancer
- Adrenal insufficiency
- Gonadal dysfunction
- Decreased bone mineral density
- Obesity
- Dyslipidemia
- Insulin resistance
- Diabetes.
A systematic approach whereby survivors are screened for endocrine late effects based on their medical history and treatment exposures may improve health outcomes by allowing the early detection and treatment of these complications. The PES Tumor Related Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Disorders (“TREND”) SIG aims to improve dissemination of knowledge, increase awareness, and establish mechanisms for research and clinical collaborations.
